You have to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and a resident of BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut. Indigenous applicants are residency waived. SFU does not take out-of-province or international applicants. You need at least 90 completed units to apply. The four-year, 120-unit bachelor's degree in any discipline must be complete by June 30, 2027. Every prerequisite and course used in your adjusted GPA must have a final grade on an official transcript when you apply.

SFU lets you qualify through one of three options, and they treat all three as equal. Scores work as a threshold.

• GPA option: adjusted GPA of at least 3.83 (on a 4.33 scale).
• MCAT option: at least 510 total with a minimum of 123 in each section (no GPA cutoff, but you still need the 4-year degree).
• GPA & MCAT option: adjusted GPA of at least 3.67 plus an MCAT of at least 505 with 123 in each section.

The adjusted GPA is built from your best 60 graded units within the last 90 units of your degree, and it has to include at least 30 upper-division units (300 and 400 level units). For the GPA and GPA & MCAT options, those last 90 units also have to be done within 4 calendar years. If you write the MCAT more than once, SFU uses your highest score from your first two valid attempts in the past five years.

Your prerequisites depend on which academic option you use, and every prerequisite needs a minimum grade of B-:

• GPA option: 6 units of Life Science (with at least one course at the 200 level or higher), 6 units of Humanities or Social Science, and one Indigenous Studies course (minimum 3 units).
• MCAT and GPA & MCAT options: 6 units of Humanities or Social Science and one Indigenous Studies course.

Every prerequisite, including the Indigenous Studies course, has to be finished with a final grade on your transcript by the time you apply. In-progress courses don't count. SFU keeps approved-course lists for each prerequisite area.

Your 2027-entry non-academic application includes:

• Two brief statements.
• At least one community-service entry and one paid-employment entry.
• Up to four additional entries across those categories, for a maximum of six total.
• Accepted T4, T4A, or T2125 tax evidence for paid work.
• Five character references only after a December invitation, due February 15, 2027.

Official Criteria:

• A real commitment to community-based primary care and health equity. SFU was created to put more family doctors into underserved BC communities, and the whole process is built around that mandate.
• Lived experience and genuine engagement with communities that face barriers to care, including Indigenous communities, shown through your communities, employment, and references.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a holistic profile. After you clear the academic threshold, SFU reviews you on alignment with its mission rather than on the size of your stats.
• SFU plans to interview approximately 200 applicants. If more than 200 academically eligible, highly aligned applicants are identified, equal-probability selection chooses interviewees from that group. If fewer than 200 are identified, every highly aligned applicant advances and equal-probability selection fills the remaining spaces from the academically eligible, aligned pool.

• Application deadline: October 7, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PT.
• Reference invitation: December 2026, for selected applicants.
• Five character references due: February 15, 2027.
• Interview invitations: mid-December 2026.
• In-person MMI: March 13–14, 2027 at SFU Burnaby. Applicants who cannot attend in person are removed from consideration.

2025–26 Interview Dates (last cycle):

Invitations: January–February 2026.

Interviews: March 28–29, 2026 at SFU Burnaby.

The 2027 MMI has 8 timed assessed stations and 2 rest stations per circuit. In Cycle 1, each station lasted 8 minutes with 2 minutes for reading and transition; SFU expects similar timing. Stations assess communication, ethical reasoning, and alignment with SFU's equity and community-care mission. If you report conversational fluency in another language, you may be asked to complete part of a station in it.
